This PhD position is created within the interdisciplinary research program entitled:
”Competing Hegemonies. Foreign-dominated processes of development in Cambodia” and is funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research. The candidate will act as a team member of the Cambodia Research Group: www.cambodiaresearch.org.
The PhD project:
Title: The South Korean Investment boom: an opportunity for Cambodian entrepreneurship?
Description: This project is an exploration into the benefits, opportunities and/or threats of foreign investments for the emergence of an embedded economy in Cambodia. These
investments are integral part of a total package of agreements between the Cambodian and South Korean governments including trade deals, waiving of visa requirements and Korean aid and loans. The South Koreans invest in Cambodia in search for markets and cheap labor and their investment patterns represent an embedded approach generating opportunities for local businesses.
Methodology: This project will provide an assessment of South Korean investments in the building sector, in particular with regard to the effects on local business development. This project envisions an in-depth case study of Camko City, a US$2 billion real estate project led by a conglomerate of South Korean companies, representing the single largest investment in Cambodia’s history established with full government support.
Job description:
The candidate is required to:
Develop and implement the research project as outlined above.
Produce a doctoral dissertation within four years of his/her appointment.
Make an innovative contribution to the research program ”Competing Hegemonies. Foreign-dominated processes of development in Cambodia”.
Requirements:
1. The candidate has a master degree, preferably in economic science or social sciences
(development sociology, development studies, anthropology, political science).
2. The candidate has knowledge of and/or affinity with the theme of foreign investments and entrepreneurship.
3. The candidate is familiar with economic and social research methods.
4. The candidate has a sound knowledge of the modern history of Cambodia.
5. The candidate is a citizen of the Kingdom of Cambodia.
6. The candidate has an excellent active and passive command of both the Khmer
language (mother tongue) and the English language (TOEFL 550).
7. The candidate preferably has some proficiency in the Korean language.
We offer a full-time position for four years (starting date: April 1, 2010). The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (Dutch acronym: NWO) pays a monthly allowance (1,000 euros while the researcher is in Cambodia, 1,500 euros while in the Netherlands) and, additionally, reimburses travel and research costs (within strict parameters).
The candidate will be located at one of the partner universities in Phnom Penh and will be a visiting researcher to VU University Amsterdam in the Netherlands for 27 months
within this four-year appointment. The candidate – upon successfully finalizing and defending the dissertation – will receive a doctorate in the economic science from VU University Amsterdam.
